Saving Dill Seed

One of the first crops I planted in the garden was dill. Due to the heat and poor soil, many of the plants went to seed pretty quickly. This was disappointing as it reduced the crop yield, but it does have a positive side too. After all, dill seeds are a yield as well. I have used dill seeds in cucumber pickles and some chutneys but the bulk of the seeds produced will be used to propagate future dill crops.

All about Melons

The melons have been coming along beautifully. It has been wonderful to watch the plants getting bigger and creeping out over the grass, while their little fruits also get bigger and more fragrant. Finally, the time has come to start harvesting them!

Seed sowing for winter

Even though we are still in summer, it is well and truly time to prepare for winter in the garden. I've been thinking about what I would like to be harvesting in the next six months and deciding what I need to propagate now.

Zucchini Bread and Butter Pickles

This is a pretty classic recipe usually made with cucumbers, but in this case zucchini and capsicum. These pickles are sweet, crispy and tangy.

Zucchini and Capsicum Relish

With the cucumbers under control, I find myself faced with an ever growing pile of zucchinis... and squash.

So I've been pickling and preserving zucchini too!

Harvesting

The kitchen garden has reached a point where all the beds are planted and the harvest is starting to become quite productive. It's an exciting and fulfilling time, as there is less work and more reward!
